The first full-blown scandal has erupted involving 20 days old Shahbaz Sharif Govt, and one of Pakistan's most prestigious educational institutions, The Aitchison College in Lahore. This debacle stemmed from the actions of Governor Punjab, Beligh ur Rahman, who coerced the highly respected Principal of Aitchison College, Michael Thomason, into granting extended leaves and fee waivers for the daughter and son of Mr. Ahad Cheema, a cabinet member in Shahbaz Sharif's government.
Principal Thomason, known for his integrity, cited numerous instances of interference in college affairs by Governor Punjab, leading to his resignation today. In another unprecedented development, one of Pakistan's most respected business leaders, Syed Babar Ali, also resigned as a senior member of the Board of Governors of the Aitchison College. In his resignation, Syed Babar Ali lauded Principal Thomson as the finest The Aitchison seen in its 90-year history.
